PvT 1gate FE

General Overview

This build uses a fast Mothership Core in order to get a Nexus and play safe. It can transition into any play – 2 base all-in, aggressive Blink, or macro Storm/Colossi play.

Build Order

  • 9 – Pylon
  • 13 – Gateway
  • 15 – 1st Assimilator
  • 16 – Pylon
  • 18 – @100% Gateway, start Cybernetics Core
  • 19 – Zealot and Pylon
  • 23 – @100% Cybernetics Core, start 1st Stalker and Warpgate Research
  • 28 – @100 Gas, start Mothership Core
  • @400 Mins, start Nexus
  • Benchmark: When you start your Nexus (@4:40ish), you should have 1 Zealot, 1 Stalker, 1 Mothership Core, and around 24 Probes

Scouting

This build opens with a fast Zealot, Stalker, and Mothership Core, so any early pressure can be dealt with without scouting.  Once you get your Nexus started, you will have to worry about midgame pressures/cloaked units, so be sure to get an Oracle or Observer out after you start your Nexus and check to see what your opponent is building.

Transitions

This build is a macro opener that can transition into a macro build or an all-out attack.  If you want to attack with this build, then start a lot of Gateways (up to 6) and warp-in constantly from a proxy Pylon to crush your opponent on 2 bases worth of Gateway units.

If you want to play a macro style with Colossi, then stop all army production in order to get a Robotics Facility, 2 more Gateways, a Forge, and 4 Assimilators.  As your Robotics Facility finishes, start Observers and a Robotics Bay to go for Colossus production and Ground upgrades for a strong midgame army.  Rain’s 1gate FE is a solid Colossus follow-up to this build.

If you want to play a macro style with High Templar/Storm, then stop all army production in order to get a Twilight Council, 2 more Gateways, a Forge, and 4 Assimilators.  As your Twilight Council finishes, start Zealot Charge and a Templar Archives to go for High Templar production and Ground upgrades for a strong midgame army.  PartinG’s Chargelot/Archon Timing is a solid Templar based follow-up to this build.

Pros and Cons

This build is strong because it is so easy to execute, getting you onto 2 base economy instantly.  It can also transition very easily into a strong attack or a macro style of play.

However, this build gets later detection and less units than a 3gate Robo might, so using the Mothership Core to defend is necessary.

This build is viable on every map.
