Here’s some quick tips about mini-map awareness that all veterans should be aware of and all newer players should practice until they nail them down.
Every time you build a unit from any production structure in a game ever, glance down at your mini-map and actively consider the following four things:
- Do I see an enemy army/drop/blip on the map that I should/can deal with?
- Do I have control of every Xel’Naga Watchtowers that I am safe to take at this time?
- Do I have vision of the corners of the map that I can safely send a unit to or build a building at in order to spot for drops?
- Where is my main army and is it where I want it to be?
If the answer to any of the questions is no, then you must do something about it as soon as possible. Glancing at your mini-map often does not count as having good mini-map awareness. Glancing at your mini-map and using the information to take map control, however, does. Map control and mini-map awareness work hand in hand in giving you the vision and safety you need to win otherwise evenly matched games.
